Sherrin reveals 2020 TOYOTA AFL Grand Final Game Ball
Ahead of one of the most exciting days on the Australian sporting calendar, Sherrin is thrilled to unveil the design of the 2020 Toyota AFL Grand Final Game Ball.
In an AFL first, the 2020 Toyota AFL Grand Final will be played in Queensland and will also be the first-ever night Grand Final. As a result, this will be the first time in AFL history that a yellow Sherrin Game Ball will be used in the Grand Final.
The Sherrin football is one of the most recognisable icons of Australian sport. As the official AFL Game Ball, each year, the iconic brand creates a dedicated Toyota Finals Series Game Ball, along with a Toyota AFL Grand Final Game Ball. Integrating traditional 140-year-old hand-made processes, with modern machinery and technologies, the team at Sherrin begin the 23-step-process in producing the specialised 2020 Toyota AFL Grand Final Game Ball just days prior to the big day. Over the years, the crafting of these iconic balls has become a unique part of Footy Finals.
With 2020 being a year full of challenges and changes, the impact on the AFL season has been no exception. This year, fans will see a number of exciting ‘firsts’ in the Finals Series, including the first time a yellow Sherrin will be used for the 2020 Toyota AFL Grand Final. The ground-breaking all-yellow football was produced for the first time by Sherrin in 1971. Developed to ensure visibility during night matches, the symbolic yellow Sherrin football has been hand-stitched from premium quality Australian leather, using exactly the same processes and materials as the traditional red ball.
The team names, date and venue will be printed on the game balls, along with the 2020 Toyota AFL Final Series logo. Each ball takes more than 20 minutes to craft, guaranteeing each footy is produced with exact precision and care. Once completed, the game balls are traditionally hand delivered to AFL HQ in time for the first bounce, however in 2020, they will be couriered from Scoresby, all the way to the Gabba.
