North Melbourne Football Club 1996 Premiers
Celebrating 25 years since their win, Sherrin is turning back the clock to reminisce the famous premierships of the past.
The 1996 AFL Season was the 100th Annual Grand Final of the VFL/AFL, with the premiership team commemorated by receiving a one-of-a-kind gold premiership cup, celebrating this milestone.
The stage was set for a top of the table clash, with the two top sides from the season in the biggest game of all. However, despite finishing on top of the ladder at the end of the home and away season, the Swans entered the last Saturday in September as the underdogs, against favourites North Melbourne.
With the Roo’s slow start, it seemed as though Sydney was continuing their terrific form from earlier in the year. However, the Kangaroos' team was hellbent on their premiership quest. The Swans lead by 18 points in the first term, however by halftime the Kangaroos had turned the table and had a narrow lead heading into the second half. The third quarter saw the Roo’s dominate and kick four goals, two by Craig Sholl and one each to Peter Bell and Darren Crocker, growing their lead to 25 points at the end of the third quarter. The Roo’s bagged 2 goals at the start of the fourth quarter, where both teams traded goals until the final siren. But the premiership quarter won it for the Roo’s, running away with a 43-point win and securing their clubs third premiership victory.
