Brisbane Lions 2001 Retro Premiers

Celebrating the 20th anniversary since their first AFL Premiership, Sherrin are turning back the clock to commemorate the 2001 Brisbane Lions Grand Final victory!

Losing just five games throughout the 2001 AFL home and away season, the Brisbane Lions finished second on the ladder, only by percentage to reigning champs Essendon, who took out the minor premiership.

Playing third-placed Port Adelaide in the first final, the Lions took the home advantage and ran with it, winning by 32 points to guarantee a week off and set up a home prelim final against the Tigers. A comfortable win in the prelims, gave the Lions 15 wins on the trot. It also led to their first appearance in a Grand Final, following the merger with Fitzroy. A 1 v 2 showdown against the Bombers awaited the Lions.

The final Saturday in September was an even affair for the first quarter, with less than a goal separating the two teams at the first break, and the Lions taking the early lead. The Bombers came out of the blocks in the second quarter, kicking 5 goals to 3, to take a 14-point lead into the main break. Coming out firing in the second half, the Lions kicked 10 goals to 4, to claim the 2001 Premiership with a 26-point win.

Hart, Johnson, Voss, Lappin, Power; all played their part and contributed to the historic win. Hart was best on ground, with 23 disposals and was rewarded for his performance, receiving the Norm Smith Medal.
