2011 Geelong Retrospective Premiers Ball

Celebrating 10 years since their win, Sherrin is turning back the clock to reminisce and celebrate the famous 2011 premiership.

The 115th AFL Grand Final, between Geelong and Collingwood was attended by 99,537 spectators. The Cats celebrated their ninth premiership, with a victory against Collingwood, winning by a margin of 38 points.

Collingwood had entered the 2011 season as the reigning premiers and capped off the home and away season with the minor premiership, winning 14 games in a row, to finish with a win-loss record of 20-2. Under new coach Chris Scott, Geelong had a standout season finishing second on the ladder, with the two best teams for the year meeting in the last game for the season. Geelong and Collingwood met twice during the home and away season, with the Cats winning both, and serving the Pies their only two losses for the year.

With Collingwood coming into the Grand Final as the slight favourites after their performance in the home and away season, it was an even contest for the first half, with the Pies leading by just three points at half time. However, Geelong came out firing in the second half, kicking 10 goals to 3, to secure their 9th premiership.

Bartel, Selwood, Hawkins, Ling, Johnson, are just some of the names who played a significant role for the Cats. Jimmy Bartel bagged three goals and was rewarded with the Norm Smith medal for his best-on-ground performance. He was a player commended for his ability in creating passages of play off half-back, wing, and half-forward lines in the game and is now listed among the most elite players of the Geelong Football Club.

The 2011 Grand Final showdown was Geelong’s fourth grand final appearance in five seasons and was their third victory during this period.
